Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday laid the foundation stone for a ₹1,950 crore City Gas Distribution (CGD) project spanning the Bankura and Purulia districts of West Bengal, marking a major step in expanding access to clean energy in eastern India.

The project, authorised by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), aims to provide piped natural gas (PNG) connections to nearly 5.56 lakh households, over 250 commercial and more than 35 industrial customers.

In addition, it will set up 29 CNG stations across the two districts to fuel vehicles.

Scheduled for completion by March 15, 2030, the CGD network will also involve laying a steel pipeline grid to establish a robust gas distribution infrastructure in line with the project’s Minimum Work Program targets.

“This project marks a major step forward in our mission to make clean and affordable energy accessible to every corner of India,” said Sanjay Khanna, Director (Refineries) and Acting CMD of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), the implementing agency.

“With the Hon’ble Prime Minister laying the foundation stone today, we are proud to begin this transformative journey in Bankura and Purulia — empowering lives, driving economic development, and contributing to India’s vision of energy independence and environmental stewardship,” he added.

The project is projected to significantly reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in the region, aligning with India’s broader net-zero goals.

Over a 25-year period, the initiative is expected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 191 thousand metric tonnes — equivalent to the environmental benefit of planting nearly 87 lakh trees.

Employment generation will also be a key outcome, with the project estimated to create over 15 lakh man-days of direct and indirect work.

Upon completion, more than 65 lakh residents of Bankura and Purulia will benefit from a reliable, convenient, eco-friendly and cost-effective fuel supply.
