Rishi Sunak joins Microsoft and Anthropic as senior adviser, to donate salary to charity

London: Former British prime minister Rishi Sunak has accepted senior advisory roles with US tech giant Microsoft and artificial intelligence firm Anthropic, according to a UK government disclosure released on Thursday.

Sunak, who remains a sitting MP, will serve as a part-time senior adviser to Microsoft, where he will focus on “providing high-level strategic perspectives on macro-economic and geopolitical trends,” the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (ACOBA) stated, reported AFP.

The watchdog also instructed him not to lobby the UK government on the company’s behalf.

In his submission to ACOBA, Sunak confirmed that he would not “personally financially benefit” from the role, pledging to donate his remuneration to The Richmond Project — his charitable initiative that supports the development of numerical skills among children and adults, the report said.

A separate report from September revealed that Sunak had also accepted a paid advisory role with Anthropic, another part-time position where he is expected to offer similar guidance to the company’s senior leadership.

“We’re pleased to welcome Rishi Sunak,” Anthropic said in a statement to AFP. “His experience will provide valuable strategic perspective as we work to ensure AI benefits humanity.” The company added that “all Parliamentary rules regarding conflicts of interest will be followed.”

Sunak’s corporate appointments come after reports that the former prime minister, who led the UK from October 2022 to July 2024, had been exploring opportunities in Silicon Valley following his party’s defeat in the general election.

Before entering politics, Sunak worked at Goldman Sachs and two hedge funds.

He returned to Goldman Sachs as a senior adviser in July 2025.

His career move mirrors that of former deputy prime minister Nick Clegg, who joined Meta as president of global affairs in 2018.
