Tata Group plans 5 lakh jobs; Chairman N Chandrasekaran says gobal supply chains shifting in India's favour

Mumbai: Global supply chains are shifting in India's favour, with resilience now prioritised over efficiency, according to Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran.

He reaffirmed the Tata Group’s commitment to generating five lakh manufacturing jobs within the next five years across facilities producing batteries, semiconductors, electric vehicles, solar equipment, and other critical hardware.

In a year-end letter to employees, Chandrasekaran emphasised the transformative potential of manufacturing for India's economy.

"What might have seemed like a short-term reaction to the pandemic has proved much more enduring. Amid relentless geopolitical instability, the equation has tilted firmly toward resilience - and India, with our vast talent pool and growing manufacturing capacity - is poised to benefit," he stated.

Chandrasekaran expressed optimism about 2025, noting, "Though it is difficult to begin a new year without Mr (Ratan) Tata, there is comfort in knowing that the business he devoted his life to continues to thrive.

"Big strategic bets, made with his encouragement, are bearing fruit, particularly in hi-tech industries and manufacturing where our footprint continues to expand."

He revealed that over seven new manufacturing facilities were launched, including India’s first semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat, and a semiconductor OSAT plant in Assam.

Other projects include an electronics assembly facility in Karnataka, an automotive plant in Tamil Nadu, new MRO operations in Bengaluru, battery manufacturing plants in Gujarat and Somerset, UK, and a solar module production unit in Tamil Nadu.

Highlighting achievements across the group, Chandrasekaran praised TCS and Tejas Networks for delivering India’s first indigenous 4G telecom stack for BSNL and progressing to 5G technology.

He also mentioned Air India’s successful integration of four airlines into a unified group catering to domestic and international markets.

He further lauded the Taj brand for retaining its title as the world's strongest hotel brand.
