New Delhi: N Chandrasekaran will continue as chairman of Tata Sons for another five years, after Tata Trusts unanimously approved an extension to his term, ET Now reported.

The decision, taken collectively by trustees of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, comes amid key strategic discussions, including the group’s plans to remain unlisted and explore options to exit from the Shapoorji Pallonji Group’s stake.

Chandrasekaran had previously received a five-year extension in 2022.

Who is N Chandrasekaran?

An alumnus of Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli, Chandrasekaran began his career at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in 1987 as a graduate trainee.

Over the next two decades, he rose through the ranks to become CEO in 2009.

During his eight-year tenure as TCS CEO and MD, the company reported revenues of $16.5 billion in FY16, emerging as India’s most valuable company and largest private-sector employer.

He took over as Tata Sons chairman in 2017 during a turbulent leadership phase following Cyrus Mistry’s removal.

Chandrasekaran stabilised the group, oversaw the Supreme Court victory against Mistry, and led the acquisition of Air India.

He also launched Tata Group’s super app, Tata Neu, which integrates services ranging from airlines and hotels to medicine and grocery deliveries, with the promise of "super rewards."

Between 2016 and 2022, he served on the board of the Reserve Bank of India.

N Chandrasekaran’s salary

In FY22, his annual pay rose 19% to ₹109 crore, following a 164% jump in Tata Sons’ profit, making him one of India’s highest-paid professional executives.

Chandrasekaran is known for his passion for photography and long-distance running.

He lives in Mumbai with his wife Lalitha, and their son Pranav, who is currently an undergraduate student.
