San Francisco/IBNS: Twitter Inc. is in its final lap to make an announcement over Tesla CEO Elon Musk's $43 billion takeover offer, a deal if finalised would rank as one of the biggest-ever leveraged buyouts of a listed company.

Twitter Inc is expected to accept the $43 billion takeover deal offered by Elon Musk, The Wall Street Journal reported.

As per reports, Musk has called this his "best and final" offer for the micro-blogging platform.

Twitter is expected to announce the $54.20-per-share deal later on Monday.

Musk earlier said Twitter needs to be taken private to grow and become a genuine platform for free speech.

He currently owns 9.1 per cent stake in Twitter and is the platform's second-biggest shareholder.

Twitter had previously invited Musk to join its board of directors, but the SpaceX head declined.
