Vodafone Idea skyrockets! Shares surge after Supreme Court's big relief on all dues

Mumbai/IBNS: Vodafone Idea's shares have jumped after the telecom company secured a relief from the Supreme Court which on Monday issued an important clarification on the AGR dues, media reports said.

Vodafone Idea had asked for a relief on both additional AGR dues as well as on all pending due, the top court said.

The Supreme Court then said the Centre is free to give relief to the firm on both additional AGR dues as well as all pending dues.

After the top court's clarification, the Vodafone Idea shares traded at 13.1 percent higher at Rs. 9.87.

In May 2025, the Supreme Court had rejected Vodafone Idea's plea to waive interest or penalties on its AGR dues. The court labelled the petitions “misconceived”.

Later in October 2025, the Supreme Court allowed the Centre to reconsider a portion of the AGR demand raised by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) — around ₹5,606 crore from the FY 2016‑17 period.

In the October hearing, there was uncertainty over whether the court order was applicable to only Vodafone Idea's petition of additional AGR dues or to the entire dues.

The additional AGR dues are worth Rs. 9,500 crore while the entire AGR dues amount to Rs. 80,000 crore.

Vodafone Idea has a huge subscriber base (over 200 million customers) and is already under heavy financial pressure.

The company faces high leverage and big obligations which, without relief or restructuring, threaten its sustainability.

The legal and policy environment is complex: although the court has given the government the scope to reconsider, it emphasised that relief is within the government’s policy domain, not automatic.
