4 Best Ways to Handle Long-Standing Seasonal Allergies

| @indiablooms | Jun 20, 2018, at 11:29 pm

The weather in the country is unpredictable this year fluctuating between rain, storm and high temperature happening in the same area within few days. Spring is otherwise also the cruellest season for people with long-standing seasonal allergies.

What triggers such allergies during spring? During this season, the combination of low temperature and high humidity helps the allergens to grow and thrive. Rainy winter leads to increased pollens and then a sudden shift to warm weather releases these pollens. Windy conditions then make them airborne and they enter our bodies triggering symptoms of congestion, sneezing, headaches and diarrhoea. The problems are more prominent in those who are allergic to it.

Weather is not in our control, but we can do things that can help us handle the seasonal allergies better. Here are few of the ways that are effective in dealing with these long-standing seasonal allergies.

We can’t really do much about the outdoor air, but when it comes to indoors, we can improve the air quality at our homes and offices and make it better for breathing.

Use Protective Mask

Use a protective mask when gardening or going for morning or evening walks. Surgical masks available at chemists are helpful for preventing exposure to pollen particles through our nose and mouth. Find out from the chemist if the mask meets the standards of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and ensure that it filters out 95 percent of allergens.

Use Air Purifier

You can control your indoor environment by investing in a good air purifier. If you want to find about the various air purifiers available in the country, type the search phrase ‘air purifier India’ in a search engine. Check out the results. You will understand that there are many purifiers available, but you should buy the one that comes with HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters. Air purifiers improve the quality of indoor air and HEPA filters especially are known to eliminate nearly 99.97% of the common allergens present in air. The common allergens that can be eliminated are pollen, ragweed, mould spores and dust mites.

Follow Simple Remedies

Gargling with salt water helps in clearing the throat area. Similarly, try to do a nasal rinse to clear the allergens from nasal membranes.

Avoid Outdoor Workouts

Although it’s always advisable to be close to nature while taking a walk or exercising, it should be avoided during the allergy season. It’s better to workout indoors instead of going out to a park. The pollen counts on a hot sunny and windy day are higher when compared to a cool day. Stay indoors in a controlled environment on such days if possible or else go out wearing a mask.

With the depleting air quality with each passing day, air purifier is no more an optional appliance, but is increasingly becoming a mandatory one if you want to combat long-standing seasonal allergies. Homes and offices are places where you spend the maximum part of your day. You can make the air in these places cleaner to breathe by investing in an air purifier.
