Mumbai/UNI: Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Tuesday acknowledged that the mucormycosis aka black fungus cases are on rise in the state and the government is acting accordingly.

Speaking after attending a public health review meet chaired by Deputy CM Ajit Pawar,  Tope told, “As the number of patients with mucomycosis is increasing, the state government has issued a global tender for the availability of 60,000 Amphotericin B injection.”

“The jab required for the treatment of this disease will be delivered directly to Maharashtra in the first week of June,” he apprised, mentioning that the injection is expensive.

“The distribution of these injections is being controlled by the Central Government. However, the state government has issued a global tender to make these injections widely available in Maharashtra,” he added.

He further said, “Mucormycosis has been declared as a notifiable disease by the state government.

Therefore, every patient will be recorded. All the district collectors have been instructed to ensure that the updated information of these will be given on the Integrated Disease Surveillance Project portal.”
Stating that presently there are 2,245 patients with mucomycosis in Maharashtra, he highlighted, “A decision has already been taken to provide free treatment to the patients, for which 131 hospitals-one in each district-across the state have been notified.”

“At present, 1,007 patients are undergoing treatment under Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Aarogya Yojana,” he added.
