CMRI Hospitals celebrate World Brain Day

Kolkata, July 23 (IBNS): In an endeavour to build awareness and consciousness among people, Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI), part of the CK Birla Group, celebrated World Brain Day 2014 in the city.
CMRI organised a session the theme being ‘Our Brain Our Future’ delivered by top neurologists from across the city and attended by doctors, healthcare professionals and health conscious people.

The session focussed on how brain diseases come in different forms such as infections, trauma, stroke, seizures, and tumours.

The doctors engrossed in an hour long absorbing discussion opined – one in every six persons is likely to have a stroke in his/her life.

The panel discussion was attended by Aurobindo Mukherjee, Senior Consultant, Neurology; MK Manocha, Senior Consultant, Neurology; KK Dey, Consultant, Neurology, SS Nandi, Consultant, Neurology; and G K Prusty, Senior Consultant, Nuero Surgery CMRI.

While elaborating on myths and facts of epilepsy, eminent professor and neurologist Aurobindo Mukherjee said, “More than 70% of epilepsy patients can be cured, but only 25% of them get themselves treated in developing countries. They avoid going to the doctor because of the stigma associated with the condition.  We need to create awareness through more sessions like these to eradicate such incorrect and dated notions.”

Expressing his views on dementia, MK Manocha, Senior Consultant, Neurology, CMRI said, “We have less than 1 bed per person in the country. We need to adopt simple changes in lifestyle like healthy eating, no intake of tobacco to keep our brain healthy. Diseases like dementia can be prevented by reducing the number of strokes and head injuries which takes place because of road accidents daily. Today, India has the second highest number of cases of dementia after China.”

On the significance of the day SP Singh, CEO, CK Birla Hospitals said, “Public awareness is low pertaining to neurological diseases and brain health. Brain is the most amazing and complex organ in the human body and yet we perhaps don’t give as much importance to its care as we should. We are hoping that this initiative will help promote better brain health as only awareness can lead to prevention.”
