COVID-19: Bangladesh's death toll mounts to 2,618

Dhaka/UNI: With 37 deaths due to COVID-19 in the past 24 hrs here, Bangladesh's death toll spiked to 2,618 on Sunday.

The Coronavirus tally, too, has surged to 204,525 after 2,459 people tested positive for the virus since Saturday, Professor Nasima Sultana, ADG of the Directorate General of Health Services came up with the disclosure at its daily health bulletin today.

She said 80 labs across the country tested 10,625 samples in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of sample tests to 10,28,299 in the country.

Some 111,644 coronavirus patients have, so far, made recovery, with 1,546 recovered in the past day.

Prof Nasima said new infection rate was 24.14 per cent and the same, so far, 19.89 per cent.

The rate of recovery, so far, was 54.59 per cent while the mortality rate 1.28 per cent, the official added.

Bangladesh first reported its COVID-19 cases on March 8. Since then the country has been witnessing a sharp increase in the infections and deaths.

Coronavirus first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December last year, and then spread to newer countries and territories.

As of Sunday, the epidemic infected 14,437,859 people and killed 605,084 across the globe, according to Worldometer, a website which compiles the number of new coronavirus cases and deaths from it.

However, the total number of people who recovered from the coronavirus pandemic reached 8,624,984 across the world.
