Cyclone Roanu follows Indian east coast and deposits heavy rain

Kolkata, May 19 (IBNS) Heavy rainfall warning has been sounded in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha on Thursday as cyclone Roanu is seen hugging the east coast of India with chances of moving towards Bangladesh and/or Myanmar, according to media reports.

According to weather forecasts, the cyclone is likely to make a landfall in Bangladesh in the next 48 hours.

Parts of West Bengal is also expected to receive heavy rainfall according to media reports.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) the deep depression that formed over the west-central Bay of Bengal has turned into cyclone Roanu early on Thursday.

IMD, on its Facebook post said, "The Cyclonic Storm 'Roanu' over west-central Bay of Bengal moved north­ north-eastwards at a speed of 15 kmph and lay centred at 0830 hours on Thursday, near about 80 km south­southeast of Machilipatinam(Andhra Pradesh), about 290 km south­-southwest of Visakhapatnam(Andhra Pradesh) and 160 km south south-west of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh)."

It also said, "the system is likely to continue to move north ­north-eastwards along  and off Andhra Pradesh coast , during next 12 hours, thereafter north- eastwards and likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by Thursday night. Continuing moving north-eastwards, the system is likely to cross south Bangladesh coast between Khepupara and Cox's Bazar in the night of May 21st and  early morning of May 22 May as a cyclonic storm."
