Delhi's single-day spike in Covid-19 cases breach 8000-mark

New Delhi/IBNS: Breaking all its previous records, Delhi registered the highest single-day spike in the number of coronavirus cases with 8,593 fresh infections in the last 24 hours.

According to the health ministry data, the figure was 7,830 on Tuesday, which was the highest of the time.

The number of deaths over the last 24 hours was 85, the second-highest recorded in the city.

The total number of cases in Delhi currently stands at 4,59,975 with 42,629 active cases.

The spike in the cases of the deadly contagion coincides with the festive season as well as the dip in temperature in the national capital.

The Arvind Kejriwal government was on Tuesday pulled up by the Delhi High Court over its action taken during the last two weeks to control the contagion.

Noting that the national capital is now witnessing a bigger daily spike than big states like Maharashtra and Kerala, the court asked if the government has any concrete plan to control the situation.

Earlier a total ban on firecrackers had been imposed in the national capital and adjoining areas in view of Covid-19 and air pollution.

The National Green Tribunal had imposed a ban on the sale and bursting of firecrackers from Nov 9 midnight to Nov 30 as the country is just a few days ahead of festival Diwali.
