Govt's expert panel to meet over Covid-19 vaccine approval today

New Delhi/IBNS: An expert panel, appointed by the central government, will on Friday meet over the approval for an emergency use of three Covid-19 vaccines, including an indigenous one.

The applications have been made by the Serum Institute of India, which has manufactured Oxford University-Astrazeneca's Covishield in India, Pfizer and Bharat Biotech which has developed indigenous Covaxin.

However, Pfizer had sought more time to present their data while the other two did on Wednesday.

The meeting is taking place a day ahead of the dry run of vaccines in all states of India.

The dry runs will be held at specified locations in each state on Saturday.

In the dry runs, participants will receive dummy Covid-19 vaccines to test the mechanisms ahead of the actual vaccination drive.

The government made the announcement as the Drugs Controller General of India has hinted that the Covid-19 vaccine is around the corner.

"Probably we will have a new year with something in hand, that's what I can hint at," Drugs Controller General VG Somani said.

Earlier, the dry runs were held in four states on Dec 28 and 29.
