New Delhi: The Union Health Ministry on Friday alerted people and said 101 cases of Omicron have been recorded across 11 states in India.

The Ministry said the highest number of 32 cases have been reported in Maharashtra.

It also appears to spread more quickly than Delta where the incidence of Delta is high, such as in the United Kingdom," Union Health Ministry'sJoint Secretary Lav Agarwal said while addressing a press conference.

"Ever since #Omicron became a 'variant of concern', guidelines were issued for the states to take precautionary measures. On daily basis, trajectory across the world, along with emerging evidences are being analyzed to identify priority actions," he said.

The Health Ministry asked people to avoid non-essential travel, mass gatherings and observe low-intensity festivities.

The Omicron variant has emerged as a new challenge for nations combating COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.

It was detected in South Africa for the first time last month.
