New Delhi: India witnessed another day of massive spike in COVID-19 cases as the country registered 76,472 new cases in the past 24 hours, as per Ministry of Health data released on Saturday.

During the same period, India also recorded 1021 deaths related to coronavirus, taking the death toll due to the highly infectious disease in the country to 62550.

So far,  2648998  people have been discharged from hospitals.

The number of active cases in the country is right now 752424.

The number of global novel Coronavirus cases has topped 24.6 million, while the deaths have increased to over 835,000 on Saturday, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

The total number of cases stood at 24,646,610 and the fatalities rose to 835,730, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.

The US accounted for the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 5,913,564 and 181,767 respectively, according to the CSSE.

Brazil came in the second place with 3,804,803 infections and 119,504 deaths.

In terms of cases, India ranks third (3,387,500), and is followed by Russia (977,730), Peru (621,997), South Africa (620,132), Mexico (585,738), Colombia (581,995), and Spain (439,286), the CSSE figures showed.

At a time the country is adding over 75,000 infections on a daily basis, the central government has decided to conduct the engineering and medical entrance examinations in September, triggering massive protests by the students as well as the political parties.

Six state governments, which are run by parties opposed to India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on Friday moved the Supreme Court seeking a reconsideration of its previous order that had allowed the Centre to hold the twin examinations.

Meanwhile, the top court on Friday ruled no college student can be promoted to the next year on the basis of internal assessments.

The final year examinations will have to be conducted at least by the end of 2020, if not by Sept 30 as desired by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
