New Delhi: Delhi and parts of northern India experienced mild tremors this afternoon following a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan.

The quake occurred at 2:50 pm IST with its epicenter located nearly 241 kilometers northeast of Kabul.

Earthquakes regularly shake Afghanistan, particularly the west and center where tectonic plates clash.

Today's tremors surprised Delhi because of the intensity as the jolts shook furniture, NDTV reported.

The earthquake triggered panic across Delhi and neighbouring areas, it said.

According to reports, Delhi is exposed to the threat of earthquakes that often start in Afghanistan, especially in the western and central regions where tectonic plates collide.
