Nepal confirms presence of third variant of Covid-19

Nepali has confirmed the presence of a new fast-spreading variant, B.1.617.2, in the Himalayan country, thus taking the number of variants prevailing there to three. The new variant- also responsible for wreaking havoc in India-is behind the exploding Covid surge in Nepal.

Out of the 35 samples that were sent for genome sequencing, the new variant, B.1.617.2, was detected in 34 samples, The Himalayan Times reported.

Nepal’s health ministry has asked people to strictly adhere to the prescribed health protocols, saying the new variant is affecting people of all age groups in the country. Significantly, earlier on 10 May, the World Health Organization (WHO) has termed the variant "a variant of global concern.”

The variant is a double mutant and was first detected in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. Later, it did spread across many northern and central states in India.

Nepal has now been reporting over 8000 cases daily, with its capital, Kathmandu Valley, remains the worst affected. Health authorities have started mass testing in the valley.

The WHO and World Bank have been providing assistance to the country to tackle the Covid crisis.
