Kolkata/IBNS: With 23 new confirmed Covid-19 cases reported in past 24 hours, the number of active Covid-19 positive cases in West Bengal has reached 178 while the death count in the state has mounted to 12, state Chief Secretary Rajiva Sinha said on Saturday.

"Seven Covid-19 patients were discharged in last 24 hours, taking the total number of persons recovered from coronavirus infections in the state to 62," CS Rajiva Sinha said.

"Presently 3858 persons are in hospital isolation while 35,209 people have been kept under home quarantine," Rajiva Sinha added.

Explaining the situation in Covid-19 hotspot Howrah, Chief Secretary said that 580 samples were tested from the sensitive zones of the district.

"Of the 580 samples collected and tested from Howrah, 62 samples tested positive for novel coronavirus which is close to 10 per cent," Sinha said.

While asked about West Bengal's preparedness to conduct Covid-19 rapid testing, Rajiva Sinha said, "We are ready for Covid-19 rapid testing and waiting for the rapid test kits to arrive."

"Once we get the kits, we will start rapid testing at the containment and sensitive areas following all guidelines and protocols," Sinha added.
