New Delhi/IBNS: The Ministry of Human Resource Development on Wednesday directed the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to postpone the board examinations amid the rapid spike in the number of COVID-19 positive cases in the country.

The Centre has also asked all educational institutions in the country to postpone exams till March 31 in view of the coronavirus outbreak.

"As a precautionary measure and on basis of instructions received from MHRD , CBSE has decided to reschedule ongoing class X and XII Board Exams as precautionary measure in wake of COVID-19 virus," the MHRD said in a statement.

The order is also applicable to entrance exams organised by the University Grants Commission (UGC), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) and the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main).

At present, India has over 150 positive cases of COVID-19, with three deaths recorded already.

Worldwide, the virus affected almost 190,000 people and the global death toll is nearing 7,000.
