Bihar school toppers face re-examination following cheating charges

| | Jun 02, 2016, at 04:56 pm
Patna, June 2 (IBNS) In what comes as a huge embarrassment to the Bihar Government, 14 toppers in the state education board examinations face a retest after their failure to answer rudimentary questions on a television show shocked everyone.

“Seven toppers each from intermediate (arts) and intermediate (science) will be called for an examination and an interview before a panel of experts. The students’ handwriting will also be studied to confirm if they wrote in the answer books themselves,” media reports quoted  Bihar board chairman Lalkeshwar Prasad Singh as saying.

The board officials have put on hold the results of  two top students — Roby Rai from the intermediate (arts) stream and Saurav Sresth from the intermediate (science) discipline.

The move comes after arts topper Ruby Ray's video in which she also called political science 'prodigal science' went viral. She also reportedly said political science is the subject dealing with cooking. She has scored 91 out of 100 in political science.

Science topper Saurav Shreshtha also could not answer basic questions. The third topper in science stream,  Rahul Kumar,  called aluminium an active metal, and had no idea about sodium and electrons.

The huge outcry that followed made the  board to call all  14 toppers from arts, science and commerce streams for 'a small re-examination' on June 3

Reports said  original answer books of these students  could  have been replaced with those written by proxy candidates.

Education  minister Ashok Choudhary admitted to the possibility of an education mafia that manipulates exam results.

Bihar Secondary Teachers’ Association general secretary Kedar Pandey said a thorough investigation must be ordered into the matter because it has diluted the government’s efforts to discourage cheating.
