Kolkata, May 9 (IBNS): A set of short Urdu-Hindustani poems penned by Gulzar, titled 'Pluto' after the small heavenly body that was banished from the family of its planet, was launched in a chain book store Starmark in Kolkata on Friday with the legendary Bollywood songwriter and filmmaker himself present for the occasion.

The poems have been translated into English by Nirupama Dutt and the book is published by Harper Collins India. It includes for the first time in the book his own charcoal sketches.

“It is a privilege to be in such a book store, stocked with various types of books in the age of computers and cell phones. Nirupama Dutt, who have translated my poems in English have done an excellent job, the actual meaning of these poems remains unchanged,” said Gulzar.

The book has over 111 short poems, ranging from four to ten lines on themes like relationship with god, nature, time, with his signature wit and brevity.

‘Pluto’ was launched by music composer Shantanu Moitra and other distinguished personalities.

Speaking on the occasion, music composer Shantanu Moitra said: “Gulzar sahab is my youngest friend in Bombay. One fine morning he called me up and said ‘Pluto beghar hogaya’. For a moment I thought why a person like him is concerned about Pluto. Later it made me realize what makes Gulzar different from others.”

At the book launch Gulzar recited few of his poems in Urdu and Hindi.
