IAS officer quits job, decides to guide students for free
Roman Saini , who was posted as assistant collector in Jabalpur, quit his job in September, reports said.
Considered by many as one of the largest free education services in the country, Unacademy , which runs a website, has started its journey as a YouTube channel.
It aims at providing lessons to aspirants of government services.
Jabalpur collector Shivnarayan Rupla was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying that Saini’s resignation was yet to be accepted by the department of personnel and training (DoPT).
“He and his friends have already offered free guidance to more than one lakh students who were aspiring to become IAS officers. Five to seven such aspirants succeeded in civil services examinations in 2015,” Rupla was quoted as saying by the news paper.
Speaking on his experience on 'Unacademy', Saini wrote on his Facebook page:"In 2011, Gaurav Munjal, whom I have known since school as the closest friend called and spoke about his new idea Unacademy which he had started on YouTube and posted a bunch of videos. He had a vision of free education - and he asked me to join him."
"Four years later Unacademy is now India’s one of the largest YouTube channels with 1.1 Crore lessons delivered and 5 Lakh+ students benefitted. Recently Gaurav and I took a life changing decision, we decided to quit whatever we were doing to pursue this full time. For him it meant that he would have to step down as the CEO of Flatchat, for me sadly it meant resigning from the services. We are together joined by Hemesh Singh, who was also a Co-Founder at Flatchat, and Sachin Gupta as Co-Founders at Unacademy who was experimenting with his own education startup," he said.
"Personally, it was a difficult decision to quit the civil services, as I have utmost respect for it. But I believe in Unacademy’s vision of free education and hence, will be pursuing it full time from now," he said.
He said Unacademy has more than 500 free lessons from top educators of the country.
