Kolkata/IBNS: Vijaygarh Jyotish Roy College marked its 75th foundation anniversary with a three-day platinum jubilee celebration from October 31 to November 2.

The event commemorated the institution’s rich history, social contribution, and academic excellence. Established by refugee Bengalis, the college has evolved into a National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) ‘A’-grade institution.

The celebrations began on October 31 with a welcome address by Dr. Rajyasree Neogy and Governing Body President Sandip Nandi Majumdar.

A free health check-up and blood donation camp were organised for local residents. Highlights of the day included a science model competition for school students and a science and handicraft exhibition for college students.

The day concluded with a felicitation ceremony honouring staff members, followed by a performance from the Drama Club.

On November 1, the second day of celebrations opened with an Alumni Conference, followed by performances of folk music and dance presented by the Surdhwani Music Club. Folk singers Tirtha Sundar Biswas and Teesta Mukherjee performed in the evening.

A two-day book fair was also organised, featuring prominent publishers including Anushtup, Anand Publishers, and Dey’s Publishing.

The final day, November 2, began with a colourful procession. The event was attended by Aroop Biswas, Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of West Bengal; Jadavpur MP Sayani Ghosh; Deputy Commissioner Bidisha Kalita Dasgupta; and other dignitaries, who expressed support for upgrading the college.

The celebrations concluded with performances by Somlata and the Aces and the Anupam Roy Band.

College President Dr. Rajyasree Neogy recalled that the institution was established on November 2, 1950, in a World War II barrack by refugee Bengalis from East Pakistan.

She noted that the college now offers 19 subjects across arts, science, and commerce streams, including 14 undergraduate programmes and a postgraduate course in microbiology.

In addition, 36 skill-based courses have been introduced to enhance student employability.

The platinum jubilee celebration served as a tribute to the college’s legacy while envisioning its continued growth.

In a special message, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee extended her best wishes to Vijaygarh Jyotish Roy College on its 75th foundation anniversary.
