Prayagraj/IBNS: Gangster turned politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf, who were killed on Saturday in a caught on live firing by three gunmen while they were being escorted by police for a medical check-up, were laid to rest in their ancestral Kasari-Masari cemetery in the Chakia region of Prayagraj.

After a postmortem examination, the corpses of Atiq and Ashraf were taken directly to the cemetery for burial, stated police sources.

"Only a select few, including Atiq's minor sons Ehjam and Abaan, his two daughters and other relatives, were present on the occasion," police said.

Despite concerns that Atiq's wife Shaista Parveen might attend the funeral, she did not appear.

"Shaista is wanted in the murder of Umesh Pal, the main witness in Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal murder case, who is absconding after the incident," the police said.

Atiq's underage sons were transported from the reformatory facility where they had been placed following their implication in Umesh Pal's homicide.

While under police custody and en route to Colvin Hospital for a medical check-up, Atiq and Ashraf were fatally shot by three attackers at close range. The police nabbed the shooters at the scene.

Asad, Atiq's son, was buried in the same cemetery on Saturday after being killed in a Jhansi encounter with the Uttar Pradesh police's Special Task Force.
