Bengal: Deputy Magistrate Debdutta Ray becomes first government official to die of Covid-19

Kolkata/IBNS: A Deputy Magistrate in West Bengal on Monday died of the Covid-19 pandemic becoming the first government official to succumb to the respiratory disease, media reports said.

Debdutta Ray, 38, was posted in Hooghly district of West Bengal.

She had died at a private hospital in Serampore.

As per local media reports, Ray was at the forefront in handling the migrant workers who came from different parts of the country to the state recently.

Mourning Dutta's demise, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted, "Grieved to hear about the untimely passing away of Debdatta Ray, who was posted as Deputy Magistrate & Deputy Collector in Chandannagar. A young WBCS (Exe) Officer, she was at the forefront fighting the pandemic & displayed outstanding devotion in discharge of her duties."

"I, on behalf of the Govt of West Bengal, salute her spirit & the sacrifice she's made in service of the people of #Bengal. Spoke to her husband today & extended my deepest condolences. May the departed soul rest in peace & lord give her family strength to endure this loss."
