Bhima Koregaon case: Bombay HC allows jailed activist Varavara Rao to be shifted to hospital

Mumbai/IBNS: The Bombay High Court on Wednesday allowed poet-activist Varavara Rao, who has been jailed in connection with the Bhima Koregaon violence, to be shifted to Nanavati Hospital here for 15 days, media reports said.

Lawyer Indira Jaising, who was arguing on behalf of Rao, said as quoted by NDTV, "He (Varavara Rao) is completely bed-ridden, and has no medical attendant. He is in diapers and has a catheter. The catheter was not changed for three months, as there was no one to change it."

"I am alleging negligence on the part of the state. If the state is unable to look after him, he needs to be shifted to Nanavati Hospital," she added.

Jaising said Rao had sustained head injuries in JJ Hospital.

The event, called the Elgar Parishad, was organised to commemorate the Battle of Bhima Koregaon between the East India Company and the Peshwa faction of the Maratha Confederacy in 1818.

It may be recalled that the violence broke out between Dalits and upper castes in the village of Bhima-Koregaon near Pune on January 1, 2018, a day after the event, allegedly due to the incendiary speeches made by some activists at the Elgar Parishad event.
