Big twist in RG Kar case! Calcutta HC orders fresh probe into evidence destruction allegations
Kolkata/IBNS: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered a fresh probe into allegations of destruction of evidence in the 2024 R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case, media reports said.
A bench of Justices Shampa Sarkar and Tirthankar Ghosh directed a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by the Joint Director (Eastern Zone) of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to examine the allegations.
The court specifically asked the SIT to probe charges raised by the victim’s family and re-investigate the sequence of events between the night of the crime, including dinner time, and the cremation the following day.
The bench also empowered the CBI to interrogate any person deemed necessary for the investigation.
The CBI has been ordered to re-investigate the sequence of events in the duration between the dinner time on the night of the crime and the cremation on the following day.
The order has empowered the central probe agency to quiz anyone deemed necessary for the sake of investigation.
The crucial order comes days after the new Bharatiya Janata Party government in West Bengal reopened the RG Kar files.
Within a week after taking charge, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari suspended three IPS officers over their handling of the crime that had sent shockwaves across the country and triggered widespread protests.
Three officers- Vineet Goyal, Indira Mukherjee and Abhishek Gupta- would remain suspended pending a probe into their roles in handling the case.
Goyal, currently serving as the Additional Director-General (ADG) of the Special Task Force (STF), was the Kolkata Police Commissioner when the crime took place.
Gupta had served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), while Mukherjee was the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) in August 2024 when the incident occurred.
Adhikari also alleged that two police officers had offered money to the victim’s family on behalf of the state government.
Adhikari said phone calls and WhatsApp chats of police officers linked to the case would be examined as the probe progresses.
He further stated that the role of any minister — or even the then Chief Minister, if required — would also come under scrutiny.
Case background
The case pertains to the rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor on August 9, 2024, inside R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.
A civic volunteer linked to Kolkata Police, Sanjay Roy, was arrested shortly after the incident.
The case was later transferred to the CBI following concerns over the initial probe.
On January 18, 2025, a Kolkata court convicted Roy of rape and murder and sentenced him to life imprisonment till death.
However, the victim's family suspects the actual culprit was shielded by the administration.
