CAA protests: Violence erupts in parts of Delhi, constable killed

New Delhi/IBNS: A police constable was killed as violence once again erupted in northeast Delhi during protests for and against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act or CAA, media reports said.  

The deceased cop was identified as Head Constable Ratan Lal.

He reportedly sustained grave injuries during the stone-pelting in the Gokalpuri area during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protest.  

Head Constable Ratan Lal was taken to a nearby hospital where he died of his injuries, reported India Today.

According to reports, violence took place between Maujpur and Jaffrabad metro stations.

Both the metro station are currently shut as violence in the region also took place on Sunday.

The fresh violence occurred less than 24 hours from the first incidents of clashes.

Delhi Police said Section 144 has been imposed int he violence-hit regions in the city.

The two protesting groups clashed on Monday, triggering tension in the national capital at a time when US President Donald Trump is visiting the country.

Kejriwal, Lt Governor tweet:

Reacting to the incidents, Arvind Kejriwal tweeted: "Very distressing news regarding disturbance of peace and harmony in parts of Delhi coming in. I sincerely urge Hon’ble LG n Hon'ble Union Home Minister to restore law and order n ensure that peace and harmony is maintained. Nobody should be allowed to orchestrate flagrations."

Kejriwal condemned the death of the cop in the violence.

Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal urged people to maintain peace. "Instructed @DelhiPolice  and @CPDelhi to ensure that law and order is maintained in North East Delhi. The situation is being closely monitored. I urge everyone to exercise restraint for maintenance of peace and harmony," he said.

Trump visiting India:

The fresh incidents of violence are occurring in the country when US President Donald Trump is visiting India.

He arrived in India earlier in the day and attended the Namaste Modi event in Ahmedabad's Motera Stadium.

He is currently in Agra.
