Chennai, Aug 3 (IBNS): Former Maldives Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor, who tried to enter India by boat, was sent back to the archipelago, media reports said.

Ghafoor on Thursday arrived in Tamil Nadu's Tuticorin on a cargo vessel, that too without any valid document.

He was seeking political asylum in India as he is facing trials in alleged corruption cases back home.

He has been living under house arrest in Maldives.

In response to a query on former Vice President of Maldives not permitted entry into India, External Affairs Minister Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said, "There are designated entry points through which foreigners are allowed entry into India. The entry is facilitated on the basis of appropriate valid travel documents. In the instant case, since he was not entering India through a designated entry point and did not possess the valid document, he has not been permitted entry into India."
