Former PM Manmohan Singh loses SPG security cover

New Delhi, Aug 26 (UNI): The Special Protection Group (SPG) - the elite security cover provided to proximate security to the Prime Minister of India and former Prime Ministers of India, was withdrawn from Manmohan Singh citing routine assessment after taking reviews from all agencies.

"The current security cover review is a periodical and professional exercise based on threat perception that is purely based on professional assessment by security agencies. Dr. Manmohan Singh continues to have a Z+ security cover," a home ministry official confirmed on Monday.

According to sources, the security cover has also been withdrawn from former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda.

So the 3000 odd elite SPG security force is now left for only Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Gandhi family.

The SPG was established in 1985 after the assassination of former prime minister Indira Gandhi in October 1984.
