India has handed over a 3.5-tonne consignment of essential medicines to Seychelles, officials said on Friday.

The Indian Embassy in Seychelles said in a post on X that High Commissioner Rohit Rathish formally handed the consignment to Health Minister Dr. Marvin Fanny in the presence of President Dr. Patrick Herminie.

“The consignment of 3.5 tonnes includes medicines for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, gastrointestinal ailments, vitamins and supplements,” the Embassy said.

“This donation reaffirms India’s commitment to support Seychelles in its development priorities,” it added.

India and Seychelles established diplomatic relations soon after the island nation gained independence in June 1976. An Indian Naval Ship, INS Nilgiri, participated in Seychelles’ Independence Day celebrations that year.

India set up its diplomatic mission in Victoria in 1979, initially with its High Commissioner based in Dar-es-Salaam and concurrently accredited to Seychelles. The first resident High Commissioner assumed office in 1987. Seychelles opened its resident mission in New Delhi in 2008.
