Colombo/New Delhi/UNI: India provided much-needed consignments of petrol and diesel to Sri Lanka, amid a spiralling economic and political crisis in the island nation.

The Indian Embassy in Sri Lanka said in a tweet: “#Indian credit line for fuel at work!!! One consignment each of 36,000 MT petrol and 40,000 MT diesel was delivered to #SriLanka in the last 24 hours. Total supply of various types of fuel under Indian assistance now stands at more than 270,000 MT.”

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said in a tweet: “As we say, Neighbourhood First.”

Ships carrying the diesel and petrol supplied under the Indian credit line berthed at Sri Lankan ports yesterday.

Sri Lanka has been witnessing massive protests due to the fuel and food shortage and the long hours of electricity cuts.
