Jammu and Kashmir administration revokes Farooq Abdullah's detention

Srinagar/IBNS: The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Friday revoked the detention of former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah who will be released from custody after seven months, media reports said.

Abdullah, 82, was detained on Aug 5 when the Centre took the historic step of abrogating Articles 370 and 35A withdrawing the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

Later the National Conference (NC) leader, two other former Chief Ministers, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, were slapped with Public Safety Act (PSA), which allows one to be detained for three months with multiple extensions.

However, there is no information yet over the release of Omar Abdullah and Mufti.

The revocation of the detention came four days after eight opposition parties sent a resolution to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led union government demanding an immediate release of the three former Chief Ministers.

The central government on Aug 5 also had bifurcated then state Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Following the revocation of the detention, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted, "I pray for the good health and long life of J&K’s former CM & veteran leader Farooq Abdullah Ji.  Let the other two former CMs @OmarAbdullah & @MehboobaMufti be freed as well from the unjust PSA and be allowed to join the democratic process immediately."
