Jammu and Kashmir: Clashes erupt near encounter site in Srinagar outskirts

Srinagar/UNI: Security forces burst teargas shells to disperse demonstrators protesting near an encounter site in Srinagar outskirt, where Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) chief Dr Saifullah was killed in the gunfight on Sunday.

Official sources said that immediately after security forces launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in Rangreth area in the city outskirts, scores of youth hit the streets in the nearby areas and tried to disrupt the operation.

However, they said security forces already deployed to prevent protestors from marching towards the encounter site, swung into action and tried to stop the demonstrators.

“As the demonstrators didn’t back down, security forces burst teargas shells to disperse the protestors, who pelted stone,” they said.

Dr Saifullah, who became the chief of HM after Riyaz Naikoo was killed in an encounter in May this year, was on Sunday gunned down by security forces while a suspect was arrested in Rangreth area in the city outskirts.
