Kashmir: One civilian killed, 4 others injured in Pak ceasefire violation in Karnah

Srinagar/UNI: A civilian was killed and four others were injured when Pakistan troops violated ceasefire and resorted to indiscriminate shelling and firing in border town of Karnah in frontier north Kashmir district of Kupwara.

This is the fourth incident of ceasefire violation by Pakistan troops during the last 48 hours in which several residential houses were damaged in the shelling.

Official sources told UNI that Pakistan troops intermittently resorted to unprovoked shelling and firing, targeting forward posts and civilian areas at Karnah during last 24 hours.

They said a civilian, identified as 60-year-old Saleem Ahmad, was killed and four others were injured when the shells fell in civilian area Tad, Tanghdar in Karnah last evening. “The injured were immediately taken to a hospital where their health condition is stated to be stable,” they added.

They said appropriate response was given by Indian soldiers in both the areas. However, the damage suffered by Pak troops was not immediately known.

People living near border areas are living in a constant fear as intermittent shelling and firing continued during the last 48 hours.

Meanwhile, people have alleged that there are no bunkers, which could be used to remain safe at the time of ceasefire violation. “We have been demanding for bunkers for a very long time, but despite repeated assurance by the administration no measure was taken to address this issue,” the local residents told UNI.

On Sunday, a soldier, identified as Sandeep Yadav, was injured when Pakistan violated ceasefire and resorted to shelling, targeting forward posts at Bakhtoor in Gurez. Pakistan troops also violated ceasefire in Tanghdar sector on Sunday.

Official sources said that Pakistan troops are violating ceasefire, reached between India and Pakistan in 2003, to facilitate militants to infiltrate into Kashmir valley. “A large number of militants are waiting at launch pads in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) to sneak into this side,” they said.

However, they said despite facing severe cold and other odds, troops remained on high alert along the Line of Control (LoC) to foil any militant attempt to infiltrate into this side.
