Kashmir Valley observes Shab-e-Baraat

Shab-e-Baraat (night of salvation) was observed with religious fervour across the Kashmir Valley.

Except for Srinagar’s historic Jamia mosque, the nightlong prayers were held at several mosques and shrines on Shab-e-Baraat, which is observed on the 14th or 15th day of Sha'ban, the eighth month of the Islamic calendar.

The managing body of the Jama Masjid Srinagar claimed that authorities disallowed the 'Shab-e-Barat' congregational prayers at the mosque on Sunday and placed Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest.

“Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid has informed that on the occasion of Shab-E- Baraat gates of Jama Masjid Srinagar have been closed by the authorities and @MirwaizKashmir placed under house arrest ,” Mirwaiz Manzil posted on X on Sunday evening.

The main religious function of Shab-e-Barat was held at the Hazratbal shrine, which houses the holy relic of Prophet Muhammad. The shrine wore a festive look throughout the night as several vendors had set up their stalls on the occasion.

People were also seen visiting graveyards at several places from Sunday evening.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and several politicians extended their greetings on the auspicious occasion of Shab-e-Barat.
