Kerala: Death toll due to Air India flight crash touches 18

Kozhikode/IBNS: The death toll due to the Air India Express aircraft crash in Kerala's Karipur airport on Friday touched 18, media reports said.

The Air India Express aircraft with 191 people on board snapped into two while landing amid heavy rainfall in Kerala's Kozhikode.

The Air India Express Flight IX 1344 from Dubai to Kozhikode in Kerala overshot the runway after skidding off while landing at around 7-40 pm.  

The mishap has left over 100 people hurt.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for External Affairs & Parliamentary Affairs V Muraleedharan said he visited the site of the crash recently.

He said the investigation is on to ascertain various aspects of the crash.

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan will visit the Karipur Airport on Saturday morning.

Official sources said the Chief Minister is expected to reach Karipur in a chopper at 0930 hrs and is likely to visit hospitals where the injured passengers are undergoing treatment.

Minister for Local Administration AC Moideen had reached Karipur earlier to coordinate rescue and relief operations.

Muraleedharan has reached Karipur in a special flight by around 6 am this morning.

He is also expected to visit hospitals where the injured passengers are getting treated.
