The four districts are Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod. The polling will end at 6 pm.

The poll in the four Northern districts are specially significant as the people of the predominant Marxist belt of Kannur district and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) bastion of Malappuram goes to the polling booths.

The outcome of the local body poll is considered as an acid test for the controversy hit CPI-M-led LDF government's credibility.

Moreover, it is crucial for both the prominent political parties in the state, who will face the Assembly election in May, 2021.

The result of the local body election is politically significant for the LDF and the Congress-headed United Democratic Front (UDF).

The BJP-led NDA, which has an average vote share of ten percent in the previous elections in Kerala, is all set to garner maximum seats and make their presence felt strong in the Assembly poll.
