Patiala: Former Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was incarcerated in Patiala Central Jail, walked out of the prison on Saturday after spending ten months in prison.

Many Congress leaders and supporters were present outside the Patiala Jail to offer a resounding welcome to the 59-year-old former cricketer-tuned-politician.

They were beating dhols (drums) and also chanted 'Navjot Sidhu zindabad'.

Navjot Sidhu's fans and supporters eagerly gathered outside the jail to give him a grand welcome. Many places in Patiala city were decorated with posters and hoardings of Navjot Sidhu by his supporters to greet him.

He was seen wearing a blue kurta and turban, while carrying a book, as he emerged from the jail.

Following his conviction by the Supreme Court for a road rage case in 1988 that resulted in the death of a 65-year-old man named Gurnam Singh, Navjot Sidhu, the former state Congress chief, was sentenced to one-year rigorous imprisonment and was incarcerated on May 20, 2020.

A tweet from Navjot Sidhu's account, being managed by his team in his absence, on Friday said, "This is to inform everyone that Sardar Navjot Singh Sidhu will be released from Patiala Jail tomorrow....As informed by the concerned authorities."
