'No country more essential than India': US envoy signals Trump visit next year
New Delhi/IBNS: The United States has described India as its most essential partner globally, with ambassador-designate Sergio Gor underlining the strategic importance of New Delhi in Washington’s foreign policy.
Speaking at the US Embassy in New Delhi, Gor also revealed that trade negotiations between the two countries resumed on Monday (January 12), marking a renewed push to strengthen economic ties.
Gor, who also serves as the US Special Envoy to South and Central Asia, hinted that President Donald Trump could visit India by next year, adding momentum to the growing diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
'Real friends' can resolve differences
Highlighting the personal bond between President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gor said their friendship is genuine and grounded in mutual respect.
He stressed that strong relationships allow room for disagreements but ultimately lead to resolution.
“The United States and India are bound not just by shared interests but by a relationship anchored at the highest levels. Real friends can disagree but always resolve their differences in the end,” Gor said during his address.
He acknowledged that negotiating a trade deal with the world’s most populous nation is complex, but reiterated Washington’s determination to conclude the agreement successfully.
Trade talks set to resume
Gor confirmed that both sides remain actively engaged in negotiations and that a fresh round of discussions will take place imminently.
He emphasised the importance of trade as a pillar of the bilateral relationship while also noting cooperation in security, counter-terrorism, energy, technology, education, and healthcare.
“India is the world’s largest nation, so it’s not an easy task to get this across the finish line, but we are determined to get there,” he said.
Trump’s possible India visit
The US envoy-designate said his mission is to elevate the India-US partnership to a new level and expressed optimism about a potential visit by President Trump in the near future.
“This is the intersection between the world’s oldest democracy and the world’s largest democracy. During my last dinner with him, President Trump spoke fondly about his last visit to India and his strong friendship with Prime Minister Modi,” Gor said.
He added that Trump could visit India within the next one to two years.
'No partner more essential than India'
Reinforcing Washington’s stance, Gor declared that no country is more vital to the US than India.
He outlined plans to pursue an ambitious agenda as ambassador, describing the relationship as a true strategic partnership built on mutual respect and leadership.
“No partner is more essential than India. In the months and years ahead, my goal is to pursue a very ambitious agenda,” he stated.
India to join Pax Silica Alliance
In another significant announcement, Gor said India will be invited to join the Pax Silica alliance as a full member next month.
The US-led initiative aims to create a secure, resilient and innovation-driven silicon supply chain, strengthening global semiconductor cooperation.
“I am pleased to announce that India will be invited to join this group of nations as a full member,” Gor said.
