No question of NRC in Bihar, needs special discussion on CAA: Nitish Kumar
Patna/IBNS: Despite being an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal (United) chief Nitish Kumar on Monday said there is no question of the implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) while there should be a special discussion on the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, in the state assembly, media reports said.
"There should be a discussion on CAA. If everyone wants, then there will be a discussion in this house. As for NRC, there is no question of the NRC and no justification for it," Kumar said as quoted by NDTV.
Though the JD(U) had voted in favour of the CAA in Parliament, Kumar faced criticism from his own party colleagues including his deputy Prashant Kishor.
Later Kishor, who is also a poll strategist, had stated NRC will not be implemented in the state which will go to polls in 2020.
Several Chief Ministers of the country including the Congress ones, Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal, Pinarayi Vijayan of Kerala have stated they won't implement CAA- which will grant citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi but not Muslim refugees who came to India from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan before 2015- in the state.
The Kerala government has also passed a resolution in the state assembly against the CAA.
However, the Centre on Friday issued a notification of the CAA effective from Jan 10.
In a U-turn from their previous statements, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in December, 2019, said nothing about NRC has been discussed since 2014 when the BJP assumed power at Centre.
