North Bengal's Kaliaganj remains on boil over teenager's rape-murder, Sec 144 imposed

Kolkata/UNI: With the situation at Kaliagunj in West Bengal's Uttar Dinajpur district taking a turn for the worse following the alleged rape and murder of a teenager, prohibitory orders have were promulgated on Sunday to thwart any further untoward incident.

The prohibitory orders were clamped under section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, banning the assembly of four or more people. two days after the teenager's body was found.

Earlier, the situation came to such a pass that police had to fight a pitched battle and lob tear gas shells to ward off a mob, who went on rampage following the unsavoury incident.

Police had to requisition more forces to bring the volatile situation under control and maintain peace.

A National Commission For Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) team visited the area and its Chairman Priyanka Kanungo had a talk with the victim’s family for about two hours.

Kanungo visited the girl’s family and inspected the scene of the incident, where the body was found. He further informed that the victim's family is not satisfied with the role of the police and wanted a CBI inquiry.

Meanwhile, political mud-slinging reached its peak with both BJP and Trinamool training guns against each other for the incident.

Earlier, BJP State President Sukanto Majumdar said, "Another girl raped and murdered in Kaliaganj, Uttar Dinajpur, WB. The girl belongs to Rajbongshi (SC) community. Instead of taking action against the perpetrators, police are beating and pressurising the family members. Shame!! "

"Look how badly West Bengal police is dragging the body of the girl raped and murdered in Uttar Dinajpur, WB. Humanity is shamed by their such acts. Shame on WB police and CM ⁦@MamataOfficial," he said.

Fuming over the administration not allowing a BJP delegation to visit the area, Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari said, "Are there 2 sets of rules for 'ex-AI'TC & @BJP4Bengal in WB? @WBPolice why did you allow Uttar Dinajpur TMC President Shri Kanaia Lal Agarwal to visit the victim's family in Kaliaganj but obstructed BJP MLAs Shri Satyendra Nath Ray (from Rajbongshi community) & Shri Budhrai Tudu? "

" The @BJP4Bengal MLAs weren't allowed to visit the victim's family & were involuntarily taken to a Police Station & made to sit there forcefully, because how else would @WBPolice suppress information & dilute evidence. They're dragging the victim's body in such undignified manner, " he asserted.
