Srinagar/UNI: An unidentified terrorist has been killed in an ongoing encounter in South Kashmir's Awantipora sub-district on Sunday morning, police said.

They said the gunfight erupted at Baragam village of Awantipora when joint teams of forces launched a cordon and a search operation following an input about the presence of terrorists.

"As the joint team approached towards the suspected spot, the terrorists, who were hiding, fired upon them, which was retaliated, triggering an encounter," a police officer said.

In a tweet, the police said an unidentified militant has been killed so far.

"#AwantiporaEncounterUpdate: 01 unidentified #terrorist killed. #Operation going on. Further details shall follow," a police tweet said.

This is the third gunfight in South Kashmir this month. In two earlier gunfights at Pulwama and Shopian districts five militants were killed.
