New Delhi/IBNS: Hinting that normalcy is returning to Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian government said mobile short messaging service (SMS) will be restored in the Kashmir Valley from midnight on Tuesday.

“SMS services will be restored from midnight, December 31, in Kashmir Valley," Rohit Kansal, J&K Principal Secretary, told media.

The announcement was made just days after mobile internet services were restored in Kargil region.

Kargil now falls under the union territory of Ladakh.

The measures were announced by the Indian government months after mobile phone services were suspended following the abrogation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir on Aug 5 by the Centre.

The politically crucial Indian state was divided into two union territories Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
