Time has come to accept that talks won't persuade Beijing: US on India-China Ladakh standoff

Washington/IBNS: In a more of a suggestion to New Delhi, the United States has said only talks won't resolve the months-long border standoff between two Asian giants, India and China, in Ladakh, media reports said.

"Chinese Communist Party's territorial aggression is also apparent on its Indian border where China has attempted to seize control of the Line of Actual Control by force," US National Security Adviser Robert O'Brien said as quoted by NDTV.

"The time has come to accept that dialogue and agreements will not persuade or compel the People's Republic of China to change. There's nothing to be gained from looking the other way or turning the other cheek. We've been doing that for far too long," O'Brien said in one part of his statement.

India and China have been engaged into border standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh since early May.

In a deadly clash in 40 years, at least 20 Indian personnel were martyred at Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh on Jun 15 night.

As per unconfirmed reports, at least 40 Chinese soldiers were killed but Beijing did not disclose any figure in terms of casualties on its side.

Even after the deadly clash, the Chinese troops had engaged in provocative action in the south bank of Pangong Tso in eastern Ladakh in late August.

India had been able to prevent China's "provocative military manoeuvres", seen as an attempt to change the status quo in the South Bank area of Pangong Lake.
