New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday appreciated Operation Ganga which was launched by the Indian government to evacuate Indian citizens from war-hit Ukraine.

The minister made the remark as more Indian citizens were evacuated from Sumy and they arrived in India on Friday.

India sent three flights to Poland to bring back 600 students evacuated from Sumy, one of the worst-hit in the Russia-Ukraine crisis.

“Students from Sumy are returning today to India. Their evacuation was particularly challenging," S Jaishankar said in a statement posted on Twitter.

"Operation Ganga, undertaken at the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has delivered due to both leadership and commitment,” the minister said.

Over 17,000 Indians, mostly students, have been evacuated so far under the 'Operation Ganga' that has been launched by the Narendra Modi government to rescue Indian citizens from Ukraine via neighbouring countries like Romania, Hungary, Poland.
