US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to visit India in May, confirms Washington

| @indiablooms | Apr 14, 2026, at 04:01 pm

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to visit India in May, signalling a potential improvement in bilateral ties following recent strains over trade issues.

The announcement comes after Rubio held a “productive meeting” with India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri at the White House, the US said.

According to US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, the discussions focused on key areas of the bilateral relationship, including trade, critical minerals, defence cooperation, and the Quad.

“Welcome to the White House @VikramMisri! Productive meeting with @SecRubio that focused on our bilateral relationship, especially trade, critical minerals, defense and the Quad. Secretary Rubio looks forward to visiting India next month!” Gor said in a post on X.

The upcoming trip will mark Rubio’s first visit to India since assuming office. However, the exact dates of the visit have not yet been finalised.

Last month, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a detailed telephonic conversation with Rubio, during which the two leaders discussed the ongoing crisis in West Asia and its broader impact on the global economy, with a particular emphasis on energy security concerns.

“Had a detailed telecon this evening with US @SecRubio. Our discussions focused on the West Asia conflict and its impact on the international economy. We particularly spoke about energy security concerns. Agreed to remain in touch,” Jaishankar said on X.

The India–US relationship came under significant strain after Donald Trump imposed steep tariffs on Indian goods, escalating trade tensions between the two countries.
