Will fight CAA, NRC alone, says Mamata Banerjee; TMC chief to skip Opposition meet

Kolkata/IBNS: Splitting an apparent Opposition unity, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said she will fight against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) alone.

Banerjee also said she will skip the Opposition's meet which is scheduled to be held on Jan 13.

The Chief Minister, while speaking at the state assembly here, lashed out at the Left and Congress for "playing dirty politics in Bengal".

"CPI-M and Congress are sorting to hooliganism in Bengal. They have indulged in violent activities in Malda and are responsible for torching the vehicles," Banerjee said.

Reacting to Banerjee's decision, West Bengal Congress president Somen Mitra told IBNS, "Who is stopping her? If she wants to protest alone, she is free to do that. But she must remember that she is not the only person who is protesting against the CAA and NRC. The entire country is protesting against it."

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief's decision came a day after 10 trade unions had called for a 24-hour nationwide bandh to protest against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Centre on a number of "anti-people policies" including the CAA and NRC.

Banerjee on Wednesday attacked the Left for resorting to violence to make bandh successful in West Bengal.

"At least they (Left) should have thought about the falling Indian economy. The Left has turned into a signboard due to their violence and cheap politics," the Chief Minister had said a day ago.

The leaders of several opposition parties are on Jan 13 likely to discuss the violence on universities and protests which are taking place against the CAA across the nation.
