2nd Test: Vijay's 144 helps India post 311/4

Brisbane, Dec 17(IBNS): Murali Vijay hammered a stylist 144 and Ajinkya Rahane scored unbeaten 75 as India posted 311 for the loss of four wickets at the end of the first day of the second Test here on Wednesday.

Vijay showed his brilliance with the bat as taking Shikhar Dhawan (24) they added 56 runs on the opening wicket partnership to give India a strong start.

After Mitchell Marsh took Dhawan's wicket to give Australia their first break through.

Cheteshwar Pujara (18) and Virat Kohli (19) departed quickly  as India were reduced to 137 for three.

Rahane and Vijay added 124 runs in the fourth wicket partnership to bring back India back into the game and the duo played a crucial role in helping the 300-run mark.

At stumps, Rahane and Rohit Sharma (26*) remained unbeaten at stumps. Both added 50 runs in their fifth wicket stand and the partnership will be crucial on Thursday in case India aims to post more bigger total and out pressure on Australia.

On a bouncy Gabba pitch, regular captain MS Dhoni, who returned to the side after a gap of aTert match due to injury, took the brave decision of batting first after winning the toss.

Josh Hazlewood took two wickets for Australia.

Steve Smith is captaining the side in the absence of injured Michael Clarke.
