Tokyo/IBNS: As the Coronavirus pandemic continues to sweep the world, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics have been postponed to the summer of 2021, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Tuesday.

The Olympics Games this year in Tokyo were scheduled to be starting from July 24.

The historic decision was taken after a telephonic conversation between IOC president Thomas Bach and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in the wake of the mayhem caused across the globe by the novel coronavirus.

The Olympics Games have been the latest sporting event to be impacted by the coronavirus, which originated in China's Wuhan city.

The committee was under high pressure over postponing the games as top federations announced that would pull out of the Tokyo Games.

There are 381,760 coronavirus cases worldwide with 16,558 people succumbing to the virus, according to worldometers.info. A total of 102,429. people have recovered.
